Remove “Protected View” from Office 2013

Office 2013 has a new feature that blocks potentially dangerous files. Personally, I find this pretty damn annoying. Office gives you a random error saying “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”.

You can unblock individual files by selecting document properties and clicking “unblock”:

Personally, I want this behavior gone. Open Word, open Settings and locate the Trust Center section. Click “Trust Center Settings” and locate the “Protected View” area and uncheck all options.

  5. Thank you! Oh my god, I can't tell you how frustrated I was with this behavior...uninstalled it twice thinking there was a problem with the install since Office 2010 could open all of these files.

Very frustrating. The error message says nothing about this being a protected document. And if I'm in Outlook and receive a document I can neither preview it nor open it. I have to save it somewhere and then unblock it OR change these protected mode settings which, of course, are not recommended by Microsoft...

This makes absolutely no sense... and this JUST surfaced after upgrading to windows 8.

Thanks for the fix - awesome!

I don't understand Microsoft - first they take away the organized start menu and make it more difficult to find programs you want. Now they are preventing you from opening their files! What kind of a business strategy is that lol?

This is not a new feature. It is in Office 2010. What is new is it's behavior under Windows 8. It's a bug: the documents should open in Protected Mode, but they're just failing to open. I'm sure Microsoft will fix it in an update, which will be better than disabling the protection that is being advocated in this blog.

The same problem and inscrutable messaging occurs on Windows 7 as well, so it's not just Windows 8.

  30. You are a legend. What a stupid idiotic setup. Why would Microsoft do this without any blinking warning. Didn't even get an error message just a continual loading screen. Makes me angry they just make things worse.

Ha and here I am having reinstalled office 2013 because i thought it was broken! Can't believe that this is the default behaviour as if I download a document from the internet/email that I don't want to read?
